Samuel F. Hershey

1904 - 1987

A native of Peru, Indiana, Samuel Hershey came to Rockport in 1923, drawn by the presence of friends and by the town's burgeoning reputation as an artists' colony. Taken by what he found, Hershey returned the following year, beginning a lifelong relationship with the town punctuated by painting and teaching assignments at the Cambridge School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, the Graduate School of Design of Harvard University, and Rhode Island School of Design. Hershey's devotion to the Rockport art scene would include painting three WPA murals for the Rockport Town Hall in the mid-1930's and serving as president of the Rockport Art Association from 1947 to 1951.
