Gloucester Daily Times: 'The Changing Times' to Explore Changes in Local News and Photos
February 7, 2024
“For the times they are a-changin’,” sang Bob Dylan, and the same could be said about the way local news and photos are gathered on Cape Ann and elsewhere in recent decades.
The panel discussion “The Changing Times: The 21st century Gloucester Daily Times Newsroom” will explore changes in local news gathering and photojournalism as part of the Cape Ann Museum’s CAMTalk: Exhibition Series focused on the exhibit “Above the Fold: The Photographers of the Gloucester Daily Times, 1973-2005.”
The talk will take place Saturday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m., in the auditorium at the museum, 27 Pleasant St., Gloucester. The event is free for members, $10 for non-members, and will be livestreamed on Vimeo and Facebook.
The talk will feature a panel made up of Times Editor Andrea Holbrook, Staff Writers Gail McCarthy and Ethan Forman, and former Chief Photographer Mike Dean, who worked on staff from 2000-2008. A selection of Dean’s work is among those of Gloucester Daily Times’ photographers, including current Staff Photographer/Photo Editor Paul Bilodeau, highlighted in “Above the Fold.”
During Dean’s eight years on staff, the paper’s photo department experienced some of its most significant changes since the personal computer was incorporated into the newsroom more than a decade before. In fact, Dean was instrumental in bringing digital photography to the Times in 2002.
The museum acknowledges the North of Boston Media Group and the Gloucester Daily Times for sponsoring and assisting in the creation of “Above the Fold” and The Clara E. and John H. Ware Jr. Foundation for its support of the CAM Photo Archives and initiatives of its library and archives.

The “Above the Fold: The Photographers of the ‘Gloucester Daily Times,’ 1973-2005,” exhibit runs through March 17.
