Ships at Sea: A Celebration of Cape Ann's Role in the Maritime Trades

New England is inextricably entwined with the sea and nowhere is that fact more apparent than here on Cape Ann. From our art and architecture to our literature and music, from the social fabric of our diverse neighborhoods to the ebb and flow of our maritime based economy, the influences of the sea run deeply through the core of our community, past and present. With this exhibition, Ships at Sea, the Cape Ann Museum celebrates our ties to the sea and the art which it has inspired.

The Cape Ann Museum thanks Roswitha and William Trayes for making works of art from their extensive collection available to us. Bill and Roswitha have been collecting the best of Cape Ann for a long time and have amassed a collection which is especially strong in the area of marine arts. Bill in particular has a keen interest in maritime art which coupled with his appreciation for the history of this area makes him an astute and resourceful collector. The Trayes share a strong commitment to education and view their collection as a means for students of all ages to gain a deeper understanding of the maritime history of Cape Ann and beyond.
