Championing Women: Selections from the Permanent Collection

The Cape Ann Museum's fine arts collection has grown measurably in recent years, strengthening the organization and providing visitors with an array of new and diverse works by a broad range of artists. On display here is a selection of artwork by women artists who have found inspiration on Cape Ann including several who maintain studios in the area today. Many of the works are recent acquisitions which came into the Museum’s collections as gifts from private collectors, from artists themselves and, on occasion, through purchases.

While women have worked as artists in this region for as long as men and have exhibited their artwork alongside that of their male counterparts for over 100 years, many of Cape Ann’s most talented women artists remain in the shadows. It is hoped that through exhibitions like this, insight will be gained into the accomplishments of these talented individuals and that their artistic achievements will be allotted their proper place within Cape Ann's artistic history.

The Cape Ann Museum is indebted to the many individual and private foundations that have contributed to the growth of the organization’s fine arts collections. Foremost among them is the Kanter Kallman Foundation, whose ongoing support has allowed the Museum to make several important acquisitions in recent years. Their leadership and vision is to be commended.
