Castagnacci: Notes from a Quarry Member Opening

This summer, the Cape Ann Museum will present a special exhibition of works by contemporary artist Vincent Castagnacci. Opening on July 22, Notes from a Quarry will focus on Castagnacci’s drawings and paintings from the mid-2000s to the present, pulling in earlier works from the 1970s that reflect the strong influence Cape Ann has had—and continues to have—on the artist.
Originally from Providence, Rhode Island, Vincent Castagnacci studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and with George Demetrios in Boston and Gloucester in the early 1960s. Castagnacci earned both a BFA and an MFA from Yale University. It was through his work with Demetrios, first as a student and then as a studio assistant, that Castagnacci came to know and love Cape Ann. For the past 40 years, the Castagnacci family has owned property looking out over Folly Cove. The area’s rugged shoreline, as well as nearby Dogtown have provided Castagnacci with infinite inspiration and the themes of excavation, bedrock, trees and horizons as reflected in the landscape serve as the framework for the exhibition.
