From visual artists like Vincent Castagnacci, currently on display at the Cape Ann Museum, to the dancers, musicians, choreographers, and videographers involved in ten years of Quarry Dances, the quarries of Cape Ann have provided inspiration to artists, scholars, and authors for generations.
The innovative idea of creating Quarry Dances began ten years ago with Ina Hahn’s passionate love for the quarries of Cape Ann and the desire to protect these unique treasures. Each dance has been a site-specific modern dance choreographed for a particular quarry. Until COVID, the performances were in person. Since 2020, they have been filmed on location and then viewed as films.
This year, Quarry Dance X: The Film marks a decade-long series of the quarry dances, always with Dušan Týnek as the choreographer. Learn about the project from coordinator Lisa Hahn and then watch the 36-minute film. The film features Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre dancers at two private Cape Ann quarries during the summer of 2021. Filmed by Anders Johnson, the work features original music composed by Joe Mulholland, a professor at Berklee School of Music in Boston.
