Pennsylvania Railroad War Memorial
The Pennsylvania Railroad War Memorial was made by Walker Hancock between 1949 and 1952. On display in the Museum are two scale models of the work, both done in plaster.
The Memorial, commissioned by the Pennsylvania Railroad, depicts an angel lifting the body of a soldier. On its base, just above the fallen helmet and ammunition belt, the actual Memorial bears the names of more than 1,300 employees of the railroad who died in World War II. The finished work was cast in bronze at an overall height of 39 feet and is installed at the Thirtieth Street Station in Philadelphia. It remains one of Walker Hancock's most noteworthy accomplishments.
