Mary Shore

1912 - 2000

Mary Shore, a painter and assemblage artist, was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Cooper Union.  By 1946, she was on Cape Ann and by the early-1950s was living in East Gloucester and immersed in the local art scene.

For many years Shore was involved in the Cape Ann Festival of the Arts, exhibiting her works alongside fellow modernists Helen Stein, Albert Alcalay, Doris Hall and Kalman Kubinyi.  She was also actively involved with the Cape Ann Society of Modern Artists, a short-lived group that promoted modern art on Cape Ann; the group included, in addition to Shore, Tom O’Hara and Umberto Romano.
