Helen Stein

1896 - 1964

Helen Stein was born in New York and attended the Art Students League where she studied with John Sloan, among others.  She first came to Gloucester in 1927 and after a short stay in Paris, moved here permanently in 1930, making her home on Marble Road in East Gloucester.

Stein played an essential role in shaping the fabric of the East Gloucester and Rocky Neck art colony and promoting modern art in the area.  She was a friend of Marsden Hartley (although that friendship ended when she married artist Ernest Thurn in 1936) and of poet Charles Olson.
